Safe Surfing with the leading Internet Parental Filter

To enable the parental controls click on arrow next to the traffic light button in the toolbar as shown above and select Options from the drop down menu. The first time you do this you will be asked to setup a password/pin. From then on you will need this password/pin to change parental controls. Please make sure it is memorable. Once into the Parental Control settings you can change your password by selecting Change Password.

For added protection and peace of mind, parents can now log the surfing activity of their children. In the Parental Control Settings dialog which can be obtained by clicking the arrow next to the traffic lights select"Options..." from the menu then select the tab "Log Surfing Activity". Check the checkbox labled "Log Surfing Activity" at the bottom to start to record where your children visit and when.

elertz are a special kind of browser bookmark. Websites put special kinds of links on their pages which when clicked allow you to add an elertz bookmark to your browser. These bookmarks are special because they don't just point to a static webpage. They are active and alert you to when some content changes on a site. So for example if you add an elertz to tell you when a stock or share price gets to a level the website will fire that elertz to tell you when this happens. When the share price reaches the you are interested in the ElretZ will start to flash and when you click on it it will take you to a page that describes the event that took place, in this case information about your shares.

elertz put you in control. They are completely anonymous and secure. You decide what you want to be alerted to, and if you don't like it, you can just remove the elertz. It is as simple as removing a bookmark entry to unsubscribe.

elertz make your bookmarks come to life and let websites tell you when they have new content that might interest you. They are very simple to use. If you can use bookmarks you can use elertz.

Adding an elertz could not be easier. When you click on a link provided by a website a message box will popup which will look like this:

When you click "Yes" to this dialog box a new elertz is created in your browser. Once added you can see your elertz in your bookmarked favorites where a new entry exists as in the picture below

The bookmarked link is just like any other. You can click it and it will take you to a webpage. You can drag and drop it into different folders just as you can any other bookmark. What is special about it is that the website you book marked can tell you when certain events happen.

After you have added an elertz you are all setup and you just need to wait for the website who sent you the elertz to send you an update. You know when you have an update when the star in your toolbar starts to flash red and yellow. To see which elertz have changed you just need to click on this star and a dropdown window will open which looks like this :

This will list your elertz and the time that they have updated. Simply Click on the name in this case "Example New Car" and it will take you to the web page which describes the changes.

Another method to detect when an elertz fires is to look in your browser favorites. The fired elertz will have a red star to show that they have changed rather than the ordinary yellow star. By clicking on the star it will take you to the new updated content. See the picture below.

You can manage your elertz in one of two different ways. Because elertz are just bookmarked favorites you can add and delete them just as you would any other bookmark. Just open you favorites and right-click an elertz to delete it. You can also drag and drop the elertz to another folder within your favorites to organise them.

The other method you can use is to open the elertz settings dialog. This is done by clicking the button on the toolbar. This opens the dialog box shown below.

Each of your elertz is listed in the dialog box. You are able to make an elertz inactive if you wish by un-checking the active checkbox. This will stop you receiving alerts for this elertz. The date in the box is the date of the last time you received an update on this elertz. The description gives you some information on what the elertz is about. By clicking an elertz row you can select it, and then click Delete to remove it from your browser completely.

Using this dialog you can determine how you should be notified about new updates on your elertz. For example you can stop the elertz browser star flashing when a change arrives. You can also change the time the star flashes for.

If a particular elertz is getting fired too often you can just delete it from your favorites or set it to be in-active. You can do this from the elertz settings button . The beauty of elertz is that it puts you in control. If a website sends you too many elertz you can just delete them from your browser. Unlike Email it is very easy to unsubscribe. You may also want to configure your elertz to not flash or decrease the time elertz flash for. You can also do this from your settings button .

The browser eraser is available from the FreeShield Toolbar. It allows you to remove cached information within your browser. Click the button in the toolbar and a dialog like the one below will popup.

On the left hand side there are a series of checkboxes allowing you to erase different parts of your browser's cache. Each one is explained in turn below.

Browser Cache
Selecting this option will clear the browser’s store of web pages. As you surf all of the HTML files (web pages) and images you view are downloaded to the temp internet files by default. To save disk space and also keep the websites that you downloaded private it is wise to clear your browser cache periodically.

Erase Cookies
Selecting this will delete all the cookies stored on your machine. Cookies are small pieces of information sent by a web site to store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser and can tell people where you have surfed. It is a good idea to remove these to ensure your privacy. Some cookies remember your logins to websites so make sure you always keep a note of logins to sites like yahoo mail before removing cookies.

Clear History
Selecting this will delete the entries stored by the FreeShield tool bar, if you want to keep the keywords you are searching for private you should remove these from time to time.

Empty Recycle Bin
Selecting this will delete all the files stored in your recycle bin . It's only when you empty your recycle bin that windows actually deletes a file and frees up the space it takes up. So make sure that when you want to delete a file it is really gone by selecting "Empty Recycle Bin"

Clear Temp Files
Selecting this will delete all the files stored by Windows in the temporary folder. Your computer can sometimes be required to store temp files while installing, uninstalling etc. These files are not required and often left on your machine to take up space, so if you are low on space or simply just want to clean out these unwanted files you can select this option.

Clear Address Bar History
Selecting this option will clear the stored list of addresses typed into the address bar. Internet Explorer caches any URLs that are typed into the address bar. This may become a privacy issue on a shared computer, or a nuisance if there is a particular URL you want to remove.

Clear Autofill Info
Selecting this option will clear the stored information required by IE to autofill forms etc. The data stored can be a risk to your privacy and security especially on a shared computer.

Clear Internet Explorer History
Selecting this will clear your browsers store of where you have surfed. The history option stores a list of all the sites you have visited. This History is available from the button marked in your browser. However, in order to maintain security and privacy, and prevent others from knowing which web sites you have visited; it is a good idea to clear your history.

Clear Recent Documents List
Selecting this option will clear the list of your recently opened documents that windows stores for easy access. Although it is sometimes handy, this stored list means that anyone using your computer knows what you are working on, where your files are and can easily open them, read them and tamper with them. This puts your security, your privacy and your work at risk.

Due to a bug in Internet Explorer sometimes the FreeShield Toolbar is hidden after installation . To bring it back you need to do the following twice. Select the "View" menu and select the first entry “Toolbars” from the list then then select “FreeShield Toolbar” from the list. Repeat this procedure and your toolbar will come into view.
