1985 – Dr. Martin Cooper invents the first cell phone; ‘The Motorola Dynatech’
1993 – The first lawsuit is launched against the cell phone industry by a man who claims his wife’s brain tumor is caused by cell phone use (a brain tumor shaped exactly like her cell phone antenna).
1993 - Congressional Hearings show that adequate research and testing had not been conducted prompting the industry to fund a 28 million dollar study to prove that cell phones are safe, led by Dr. George Carlo, a highly respected Public Health Specialist. Dr. Carlo later states; “The deal was – if the government doesn’t regulate us until the research is done – then we have a deal.”
1996 – Incidences of Brain Cancer in the United States double from those of a decade prior.
October 1999 - After six years, Dr Carlo's research yields alarming findings that link cell phone radiation to serious health diseases. Risking his career and reputation, he reports his candid assessment of the findings their studies had produced. His research funds are not renewed.
May, 2000 – Report linking cancer to radiation emitted by cell phones by Dr Neil Cherry is presented to the New Zealand Parliament, to Italy, Austria, Ireland and the European Parliament in Brussels.
The United Nations International Telecommunications Union (ITU) reports that mobile phone penetration (usage) stands at 12 per cent in 2000. It will grow at an annual rate of 25% to reach over 60 percent by the end of 2008.
December 2000 - The UK government sponsored Stewart Committee advises that children be discouraged from using cell phones at all.
January 2001 – French Health General Directorate experts publish recommendations to "minimize the use of mobile
telephones when reception is poor, use an earpiece kit and avoid carrying mobile phones close to potentially sensitive tissue, i.e. a pregnant woman's abdomen or adolescent gonads".
June 2002 – Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority finds that exposure to radiation from mobile phones can cause increased activity in hundreds of proteins in human cells, raising questions about the weakening of the brains protective shield (published in the scientific journal: Differentiation).
December 2004 – A new study, majority-funded by the European Union, called the Reflex Study states that Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA in laboratory conditions.
2004 – Respected Scientists in Sweden proved for the first time a definitive human link between cell phones and benign brain tumors located exactly where the patients held their cell phones.
“Unfortunately today, all of those institutions that I had faith in, that consumers have grown to have faith in, that consumers should be able to have faith in, have been compromised, in one way or another, by the efforts of the wireless industry”. – Dr. George Carlo, 2005
March 2006 - Swedish researchers report that the heavy use of mobile phones over a long period can increase the risk of malignant brain tumors by as much as 240 percent.
2007 - A new study conducted by researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and published in the Biochemical Journal reports that as little as 10 minutes on a cell phone can trigger changes in brain cells linked to cell division and cancer.
The number of mobile phone users worldwide soars to over 3.3 billion at the end of 2007; a total penetration rate of 49 percent.
March, 2008 - Vini Khurana, a top Australian neurosurgeon states that the world's heavy reliance on mobile phones could be a greater threat to human health than smoking and even asbestos. After conducting a 15-month "critical review" of the link between mobile phones and malignant brain tumors, he says that using mobiles for more than 10 years could more than double the risk of brain cancer.
July, 2008 - A survey of more than 2,000 teens in The United States in July by market research and consulting firm Harris Interactive showed that 17 million teens, or 79%, use cell phones.
Cell phone use by teens is up 36% from 2005, according to CTIA, a wireless industry association.
September, 2008 - US Congressional Hearing on Cancer and Cell Phones; evidence is presented, cell phone executives refuse to appear before Congress and Doctors urge Congress to commission a massive study.
The number of mobile phone users worldwide soars to over 4 billion by the end of 2008; a total penetration rate of 60 percent (two thirds of cellular subscriptions are in the developing world).
The Brain Tumor rate has increased by 21% in just a decade
